Tips for making vegan healthy dishes for Holi 2023

Tips for reducing sugar and using natural sweeteners:

  • Use ripe bananas, applesauce, or pureed dates as a natural sweetener in your recipes.
  • Experiment with alternative sweeteners like maple syrup, honey, or agave nectar, which are less processed and contain more nutrients than refined sugar.
  • Use spices like cinnamon, cardamom, or nutmeg to add flavor and natural sweetness to your treats.
  • Reduce the amount of sugar called for in a recipe by 1/4 to 1/3, and add additional fruit or spices to compensate for the loss of sweetness.

Ideas for incorporating traditional Holi flavors and ingredients in healthy treats:

  • You can use coconut milk instead of heavy cream to make traditional Holi desserts like kheer or ras malai.
  • You can use whole wheat flour or gluten-free flour alternatives like almond flour in your baking recipes.
  • Incorporate traditional Holi flavors like saffron, rosewater, or cardamom into your treats.
  • Using fruits like mango or pineapple, which are often associated with Holi, to add natural sweetness and flavor to your treats.
  • You can add nuts like pistachios, almonds, or cashews to your treats for a crunchy texture and protein boost.

Additional tips:

  • Use plant-based milk alternatives like almond milk or oat milk in your recipes instead of cow’s milk if you are going for a full vegan version recipe for Holi of the above ones.
  • In place of eggs, you can use flaxseed meal or chia seeds as a binding agent.
